La agricultura es uno de los pilares más importantes en la economía de Idaho y lo ha sido por muchas generaciones. Los agricultores y sus trabajadores han sido reconocidos mundialmente y en los últimos 7 años el estado ha duplicado las exportaciones agrícolas. Además de producir alimentos para otros países, los trabajadores agrícolas, están a la vanguardia en avances tecnológicos para la industria, haciendo su producción más eficiente y consciente con el medio ambiente.

Los hispanos llegaron a Idaho con la fiebre del oro durante la década de 1860. Primero, muchos vinieron como mineros, arrieros, ganaderos y vaqueros. Mientras surgió la irrigación de la industria agrícola de Idaho, diferentes revoluciones estallaron en toda América Latina a fines del año 1800 y principios del año 1900, más hispanos llegaron a Idaho como jornaleros agrícolas y ferroviarios. Hoy en día, los hispanos constituyen el 11% de la población de Idaho y su presencia ha influido en el desarrollo de Idaho a lo largo de los siglos XIX, XX y XXI.

Agriculture is a cornerstone of Idaho’s economy and has been for generations. Globally recognized, farmers and agricultural workers in Idaho have doubled agricultural exports over the last seven years and not by accident. In addition to feeding the world, these workers have risen to the occasion, becoming more efficient and environmentally conscious, and embracing technological advances in the industry.

Hispanic people arrived in Idaho with the gold rush during the 1860s. First, many came as miners, muleteers, ranchers, and cowboys. Then, as Idaho’s irrigated agricultural industry emerged and revolutions erupted throughout Latin America during the late 1800s and early 1900s, more Hispanic people landed in Idaho as agricultural laborers and railroad workers. Today, Hispanics constitute 11% of Idaho’s population, and their presence has influenced Idaho’s development throughout the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.

During this new virtual event presented in Spanish, Nuestras Voces: Agriculture in Idaho, join panelists Irene Ruiz, Bilingual Community Organizer at Idaho Organization of Resource Councils, and Alejandra Hernandez, Co-creator of Latinx Farmworkers of Southern Idaho, as they discuss how agriculture has shaped Idaho and how Idaho’s agriculture has been shaped by Idahoans of Hispanic descent. Learn about resources and organizations that support farm and ranch workers and support the well-being of our community.
