The Idaho State Historical Society is a trusted guide through the state’s history and how it has shaped every aspect of our lives, our land, our communities, our government, and our people. Created in 1881 by the Territorial Legislature and established as a state agency in 1907, the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS) is an extraordinary system of cultural and historic resources comprised of the Idaho State Museum, Idaho State Archives, Idaho State Historic Preservation Oce (SHPO), and Old Idaho
Penitentiary and Historic Sites Program.
The ISHS preserves and provides access to irreplaceable state-owned historic collections, including prehistoric, historic and state artifacts; photographs, maps, manuscripts and architectural drawings; and territorial, county, city, and state government records. The ISHS stewards and maintains 61 buildings which include historically significant structures.
The ISHS engages Idahoans and makes history an essential resource through the remarkable work of over 80 dedicated, professional sta members and 150 volunteers. ISHS sta are experts in various disciplines including history, historic preservation, archaeology, education and public programming, communication and engagement, fund development and finance, maintenance and operations, human resources, information technology, marketing, and collections, archives, and records management.

Requesting Public Records
A “public record” includes, but is not limited to, any writing containing information relating to the conduct or administration of the public’s business prepared, owned, used or retained by any state agency, independent public body corporate and politic or local agency regardless of physical form or characteristics. §74-101(13)
Anyone can request to examine and make copies of public records and information from the Idaho State Historical Society (ISHS).

Note: There may be a fee associated with the request if: you require copies of the record(s), the request is for more than one hundred (100) pages of paper records, nonpublic information must be redacted from the record(s), or if it takes staff longer than two hours to compile and supply the record(s). See Idaho Code §74-102 (10)(b).
Requesting Library & Archival Materials
Requests for copies of materials from the Merle Wells Research Library and State Archives do not require submitting a Public Records Request. A reference request for library and archival material should be requested by:
