Captivating Conversations: Idaho’s Merci Boxcar

Join Jane Sweetland, author of Boxcar Diplomacy, which chronicles the story of two trains that crossed an ocean: the first in friendship from the U.S; the second in gratitude from France. The Old Idaho Penitentiary houses Idaho’s French boxcar, which will be on display along with other artifacts during the event. Sweetland will discuss the Friendship Train, which inspired this unique “Merci,” sharing her research, a video of the Friendship Train crossing the country and photos of a few of the items sent in thanks from France.

“Captivating Conversations” is an ongoing educational series, hosted by the Old Idaho Penitentiary and featuring a variety of guest speakers and topics ranging from the history of the Idaho State Penitentiary to the issues facing correctional institutions today.
