Captivating Conversations: Work, Recreation, Rehabilitation: The Story of the Shirt Factory

Join the Old Idaho Penitentiary for a Captivating Conversation with site researcher Tate Sawyer as they uncover the full story of the Shirt Factory building, the penitentiary location that saw the most change in its history. The Shirt Factory’s incredible number of different uses over time traces the prison’s history over time like few of the others can, including some if its darker and more harrowing moments.

About Tate Sawyer:
Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, Sawyer’s lifelong passion for history. He currently in their final semester at Boise State University, where they are studying history with aspirations of pursuing a master’s degree in public history. During their time at Boise State, they have developed a strong interest in social movements throughout history. Sawyer has been volunteering with the Idaho State Historical Society since 2024, during which time they have contributed to and participated in numerous programs and events.

The Shirt Factory is central to the evolution of the Old Idaho Penitentiary and the changing philosophy of corrections. From idle time to prison industries, the conflict between free and prison labor, the use of work as rehabilitation, and eventually recreation, the Shirt Factory took on many different identities as both the prison and society evolved. Through the history of a single building, this lecture explores how changing ideas about punishment, labor, and rehabilitation shaped the shirt factory in the Idaho Penitentiary.

“Captivating Conversations” is an ongoing educational experience series, hosted by the Old Idaho Penitentiary and featuring a variety of guest speakers and topics ranging from the history of the Idaho State Penitentiary to the issues facing correctional institutions today.
