About Mark Person:
Mark Person is a U.S. Navy veteran who served until a back injury ended his military career. After his discharge, he struggled with severe depression and substance use, which tragically culminated in the loss of his friend Eric’s life. He served 15 years in the Idaho Department of Correction, where he discovered many fellow Veterans also battling depression and isolation. This realization inspired him to find a way to give back. Upon his release, he founded Day One, a program dedicated to helping both Veterans and non-Veterans transition from incarceration back into society.

Through the American Legion, he has helped establish three prison posts in Idaho, including Post 201 at the Idaho State Correctional Center, which leads impactful projects like building bicycles for children and returning citizens, and decommissioning flags with honor statewide. He and his wife Gena also co-founded A New Path, a nonprofit serving veterans and others in need. One pivotal moment in his journey was receiving a letter from a friend of Eric’s, Kristina, during his incarceration. Her words reminded me of the harm he caused and became a lasting symbol of accountability. Years later, he and Kristina formed a meaningful friendship that embodies the power of forgiveness.

Today, he and Gena have been happily married for three years and are about to celebrate their 9-year anniversary of their reconnection. They have known each other since they were 8 years old and share the same birthday. They cherish time with their children and grandchildren while continuing to serve others through their work.

“Captivating Conversations” is an ongoing educational experience series, hosted by the Old Idaho Penitentiary and featuring a variety of guest speakers and topics ranging from the history of the Idaho State Penitentiary to the issues facing correctional institutions today.
