Radiation Exposure Compensation Act Archival Support

As of July 2025, Idahoans who developed certain cancers due to exposure to radiation from the U.S. nuclear weapons program (Downwinders) and their survivors are eligible for a one-time lump sum payment of $100,000 in compensation through the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).

As part of their application, claimants will require documentation that proves presence in the state of Idaho for one of the following durations:

  • 1 year between January 21, 1951, and November 6, 1962; or
  • The entire period from June 30, 1962, to July 31, 1962

The Idaho State Archives may be able to assist claimants in locating this documentation. When located, claimants will receive a certified copy of the document, as well as a cover letter attesting to its authenticity.
