Courage and Compassion: A Community Conversation

The Idaho State Museum is excited to be hosting the Idaho Humanities Council’s (IHC) Human Ties: Conversations That Matter program to the Museum on Saturday, June 22nd at 1PM. The IHC’s program brings communities together to have respectful and civil conversations about challenging topics that are meaningful to Idaho. This conversation complements the Museum’s newest exhibit from Go For Broke National Education Center, Courage and Compassion: Our Shared Story of the Japanese American World War II Experience.

Using historical primary sources about the Japanese American World War II experience as the center of the conversation, join facilitator Shelley McEuen Howard, Professor of English at College of Southern Idaho, to discuss themes of incarceration, patriotism, citizenship, and belonging. Participants are encouraged to share their ideas and learn from others during this community conversation as they explore how the past is connected to the present.

This event is free to the public. Pre-registration is required, expertise is not.  Limited spots available.

Participants will receive complimentary museum admission with their registration and an optional 30-minute guided experience through the Courage and Compassion exhibit. Registration closes Friday, June 21st.

Event Schedule:

1-1:30PM: Guided experience through Courage and Compassion (optional)

1:30-3PM: Community conversation with facilitator.

This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council, the state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the Idaho Humanities Council or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
