The Idaho State Archives seeks original material with enduring historical value and strong ties to Idaho. In addition to our role as the official repository for the State of Idaho we also accept private donations of a wide variety of materials including documents, letters, diaries, maps, photographs and more. Each prospective donation is reviewed by the Idaho State Archives Collections Committee to evaluate its relevance and potential inclusion to the permanent collection.
How do I donate?
Please contact archives staff by email or by phone (208) 334-2620 and tell us about your materials! Electronically sharing sample images of your items can help us to make an initial evaluation of your items. Our Collections Committee will make a final decision and notify you; please do not ship items to us before you are notified. Before transferring your materials you will complete a Deed of Gift transferring legal ownership of the material to the Idaho State Archives.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
You will receive a copy of the Deed of Gift and donations may be tax deductible. IRS regulations and policies prohibit Archive staff members from appraising artifacts. Donors who wish to receive a tax deduction should consult a tax professional and a qualified appraiser prior to completing the Deed of Gift.
What happens after I donate?
After donation the collection will be processed; items will be organized and placed in archival storage materials. Archives staff will create a finding aid to help researchers learn about the collection. Depending on the size and complexity of the collection this may take some time and it is typical of an archive to have a backlog in un-processed collections. After processing is complete the materials will be protected by controlled environmental and security conditions and made available for public access in our special reading room, during open hours.
